SmoothGlo™
Many of our clients want to target multiple complexion concerns, such as rough texture, skin discoloration, and uneven tone. That’s why we love SmoothGlo, an innovative treatment that combines intense pulsed light (IPL) and radiofrequency microneedling. This single device addresses multiple concerns, giving our clients from Voorhees, Sewell, Collingswood, Northfield & Mullica Hill, and other New Jersey communities, smoother, more radiant skin.
Our medical director, plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Mirmanesh, is a laser expert who authored the initial treatment protocol for SmoothGlo. He has trained all of The Garden Medical Spa’s providers, who perform the procedure at our Voorhees, location.
How Does SmoothGlo Work?
SmoothGlo combines the powerful benefits of IPL photorejuvenation and RF microneedling in a single treatment session to improve:
- Texture
- Tone
- Pigmentation
- Laxity
- Volume
- Acne scars
- Fine lines and wrinkles
IPL
During the first stage of your SmoothGlo procedure, IPL delivers light energy to the skin’s upper layer. This breaks down pigmented (discolored) skin cells, which the body eliminates through the skin’s surface. IPL targets blood vessels, sunspots, and other hyperpigmentation concerns.
RF Microneedling
The second stage of a SmoothGlo treatment is RF microneedling. Like traditional microneedling, RF microneedling uses tiny needles to pierce the skin, creating micro-wounds and triggering the skin to produce new collagen as part of its healing process. RF microneedling adds radiofrequency heat energy to the treatment, which causes the skin to contract and tighten for improved firmness and tone.
What Happens During a SmoothGlo Treatment?
After discussing your specific concerns and evaluating your skin’s condition and type, one of our aesthetic specialists begins the treatment by applying a cooling gel and fitting you with eye shields. This ensures your safety and comfort during the IPL stage of the procedure.
As the provider delivers the IPL energy to the treatment area, another member of the team cools the skin with chilled air. This cool air lets us treat skin discoloration more aggressively while ensuring you remain comfortable. The IPL device also includes sapphire crystal cooling technology to prevent burns.
Once we’ve completed the IPL treatment, we remove the gel and customize the RF microneedling by adjusting how deeply the needles penetrate. The desired depth depends on the severity of the skin’s laxity and how much downtime you can afford. After making multiple passes over the treatment area, we apply a cooling balm before you leave the med spa.

What Happens After a SmoothGlo Treatment?
You should expect your skin to feel warm for a few hours after the treatment, with redness lasting up to 48 hours. You might also experience some minor swelling. The micro-injuries created by microneedling result in small scabs that heal and shed naturally about a week after the treatment.
Your skin may feel dry for a few days after your appointment, and avoiding sun exposure for at least a week is essential. Use gentle, non-abrasive skin cleansers and moisturize often. We recommend waiting a week before applying makeup.
How Many SmoothGlo Treatments Are Needed?
Dr. Mirmanesh’s expertise in performing IPL procedures typically minimizes the number of treatment sessions you’ll need compared to other practices. We usually recommend 2 or 3 treatment sessions, compared to the 3 to 5 appointments other providers require.
Questions?
Massage FAQs
Can I have a back massage in early pregnancy?
Yes! Our prenatal massage is a safe and gentle way to ease back and hip pain, relieve stress, and reduce swelling. Always consult your OB-GYN before starting massage therapy, especially if you have a high-risk pregnancy or other complications.
What is the difference between Swedish and deep tissue massage?
While both are popular types of massage, they have some notable differences.
- Swedish: Gentle and soothing technique increases overall relaxation and stress relief. It can be a good choice when you want to pamper yourself.
- Deep tissue: Firm technique that provides “good” pain and may leave you sore afterward. It can be helpful for addressing specific muscle problems, chronic tension, or injuries.
What toxins are released after massage?
Massage does not directly flush toxins out of the body; however, it can help the body’s natural detoxification systems, such as the liver and kidneys, work more efficiently.
How often should you get a massage?
While having a monthly massage is a good starting point, there are reasons to have them more frequently depending on your health, schedule, and budget. Massage therapy benefits physical and emotional health by relieving pain and stress, supporting the immune and circulatory systems, improving sleep, and more.
